1.7 The Island

Mab reads to her children every night, sending them to sleep with dreams of fantasy worlds where one person can make a difference, and friendship has power, and good can always triumph, and love is the key.

These are the lessons she gathered from her own favorite books as a child, often books her own father had written with her in mind. And while they didn't do her much good, she thinks, in fact they filled her with expectations the world could not meet... she can't imagine raising her children any differently.

She tells them bits and pieces about her own childhood, on a far away island.

"Is that the ship you came here on?" Junpei wants to know.

"That's a lot of sails," Finley marvels.

The knight's ghost, unwilling to listen to reason, laughs in Mab's face. "A woman is sent to challenge me?"

She switches on the Banshee Banisher. "You wanna play rough, tough guy?"

"Away with you, wench! I will have words with the men of your village!"

Well she's not letting this go unpunished.

Trouble in dollhouse land. Ghosts and werewolves!

Junpei brushes his teeth three times between every meal.

Hidden Springs is proud of its immense spa resort and expensive, elaborate public pools.

Mab figures it's worth bringing the kids here at least once.

Even Finley treats it like a big adventure, and is inspired to ask some tough questions about Barnacle Bay, such as "How often did you get to fight a kracken, Mom?"

Mab responded with some unbelievable tale for them.

Because it's what they wanted to hear.

She's told them, with a bit of distaste, that Barnacle Bay was full of people who dressed like pirates, and gritty sand and the thick smell of salt water. But the children don't share her dislike of a place they've never seen, and their questions make their mother a bit wistful.

Maybe there's a loose end or two to tie up before she can put her origins behind her.

So, against Mab's better judgement, they took a trip.

It was, as promised, an island. The parameter of it could be walked within a single day.

The Archer house is where Mab left it.

On those rocky cliffs, unchanged.

Finley and Junpei are startled by the size of this place.

Harcourt and Mara are startled to see their daughter again.

Mab's father embraces her warmly, immediately forgiving her for everything.

Her mother turns away, wiping tears from her eyes.

Mab's parents look so much older now. They were still young adults when she ran away.

Mara is happy her daughter is doing well, but the wound she carries, the hurt of her only child leaving town so suddenly, will never quite heal.

Mab can empathize. She has children of her own now. If Finley and Junpei ran away... ... ...

While Mara gives the twins a tour of the old tree house outside, Mab can speak to her father alone. She tells him how things really went, with her life on the streets. She tells him about the father of her children; he will certainly tell her mother, but Mab didn't quite feel up to it herself.

She doesn't want to be ashamed, but she is ashamed. She feels like the Beverly Crusher of the family; that Star Trek character who won't ever be remembered for anything but getting it on with a ghost.

"We were heartbroken," Harcourt tells her. "We looked for you, for a long time. But even before we got your letter... we knew you'd be alright."

Mab pauses, puzzled. "How could you know?"

"My father."

Mab smiles weakly. "Oh. His supernatural powers were more than just a story, huh. I should have known."

Junpei is freaked out by his grandparents' gnome collection.

Not to mention their photo collection.

Finley stares at her brother. "Junpei... seriously... get a grip."

"They're staring at meeee," he whines. "They're GONNA EAT US."

Mab's childhood bedroom is exactly how she left it.

The kids enjoy playing with Mab's old toys.

Finley thinks Mara's fishing career is totally gross.

"You can take home any of those toys you like," Harcourt interrupts.

Because they will be going home. Mara is trying to convince Mab to settle back in Barnacle Bay, but Harcourt knows that's a lost cause. Mab is happy in Hidden Springs, and feels she is still needed there.

Harcourt sits down to play, too.

"I want the giraffe," Finley begs, while her brother pretends to crash land a toy spaceship.

Finley thinks it's really cool how her grandfather has his very own computer room.

"We used to have a computer, but Mom had to sell it to pay the bills," she informs him. "And I never knew you wrote some of my favorite books ever! Mom never tells me anything! She won't even tell me who my father is!"

Inspired, Finley tries her hand at writing her own stories.

"They don't melt," Junpei observes.

"The ice has special chemicals in it," Finley explains, proud to have been the one to ask first.

"Grandma said these two were twins," Junpei tells her, when she's finished. "The girl one looks just like you."

The 'girl one' even has Finley's hairstyle. Finley can see it now. That is creepy.

"You should take what you want from this house while you're here," Harcourt tells his daughter.

But Mab can't bear to take things from her parents' house while they are still alive.

Etc.: As much as it annoyed me to load up the old save again, I felt like I really should.

Aside from letting Mab see her parents one last time, I wanted to give myself a loophole in case I wanted to rescue the portrait collection.

By the way, here is the ice girl, in living form:

Her name was Cayenne Archer, and she was Finley's great-great-great-grandmother.

That nose has been in the family for a long time.

  1. It was so nice to see Barnacle Bay again : ) And I'm glad Mab got to see her parents at least once more. (TAKE THE PAINTINGS! TAKE THEM ALL! WE WILL KNOW IF YOU LEAVE EVEN ONE BEHIND!)

I would love to see Mab run into Gwen and give her a hard slap. I know it probably won't happen, but in my mind it has and it makes me happy ^^.

BRILLIANT idea of including a summary of your past generations. Mind if I copy that? I can't believe no one's thought of that yet, it really is absolutely genius and so helpful.

    1. You'll know if I leave even one? Are you sure? xD

And no, I don't mind at all. Why would I? xD

  2. Definitely take the paintings. That's a lot of work right there, and part of Mab and her children's heritage!

Great chapter! I haven't read the other legacy story (I'll conquer long ones later) but it really felt like I didn't have to read the other legacy. This chapter stood on its own. :)

As to the ST-TNG, Poor Beverly. The only one who had worse character development than her, imo, was Deanna Troi. Oy! All that, "I feel blah blah blah" :)

    1. YES! Another people who may understand my Star Trek references. =)

I write this blog to amuse myself as much as to amuse anyone else, so sometimes there are a lot of them... >.>

I'm glad you felt like this chapter stood okay on its own two legs. I tried not to make things too complex.

  3. Oh do take the paintings! They're such a fabulous record of your past legacies!

  4. It was great to see Barnacle Bay again, and I hope Mab got some closure out of it.

  5. I definitely feel like I need to read through the rest of the legacies to even know what's going on. I know, I know; the generations page but then, if I do want to read them later, I feel like I will know too much about what has happened. What to do?

    1. Well, I guess the Past Generations page could help you decide if you want to bother reading about those generations in further detail or not.

The page is very basic. It does contain some spoilers, but not all of them.

Or maybe I could help in a more direct way. What's confusing you?

  6. Aww. I loved it! Seeing Barnacle Bay again made me ridiculously happy. Thanks for braving the laggy old save to show us Harcourt and Mara and give us some closure on their lives. =) Also, I hope you do use some of the paintings. I know it's your game and all, but I'd personally love to see that one picture of Arjun again, the Uncle Sam picture, as I call it. It's just so delightfully creepy. Also, the demon zebra painting. I like all of them though, but I understand the appeal of starting fresh. It just seems like such a shame not to use them...

I'm curious about Acheron using his gift to locate Mab (I mean, to find out that she was still alive). I thought that was really clever! I guess he just un-tattooed himself in order to access his powers again? Very neat.

Who are the two guys in the last picture? I don't recognize them (but that doesn't mean much, lol).

  7. Hey, you're caught up! =D

Yeah, I'm not sure how Acheron removed it. When Harcourt went missing, there was the scene where he was about to just "break" the symbol by cutting into his arm with a paring knife, but Claire saw what he was about to do and freaked out.

Anyway that's Loki (spare, gen 7, Barnacle Bay, Cayenne's twin brother) and Javier (a cousin, Riverview, Ashby's brother Rio's son... he was the gen 9 heir's close friend, and kind of disliked everything... no matter what it was, he'd sulk at it). I didn't really expect anyone to recognize Javier, haha, it's been so long! But I don't blame you for not recognizing the other one either. You can't even see his face.

I think I've made a decision on the portraits. I'll let it come out in the story, though.

  8. So I finally caught up with this legacy!

I absolutely LOVE your writing style. I've read most of your first legacy. Eventually I shall get around to your second legacy. You bring an incredible amount of creativity and storytelling smarts to your stories. Can't wait to see what happens with this generation!

    1. Oh wow, thanks for reading! <3 Glad you enjoyed it.

I think my second is better than my first. Hopefully this third one will continue the trend and be better than my second. ^^

  9. I love your story, and you've got a great eye with the screenshots too, so much expression and realism in the sims themselves. Having taken thousands of them myself (from legacies and stories I've never published) I know just how hard it is to capture those tiny fleeting seconds that they reveal personality like that.

Also, I'm one of those new to your stories, and this is the first legacy... so a tiny glimpse into the past was super cool, like the girl who is Finley's great great great... etc. grandma! Now I will have to find some time to eventually go back and read those too. I love the past generations summary page, I liked that CeCe did it too. Really helps us newbies sort it all out.

  10. Loved this chapter. I'm glad Mab got to see her parents one last time. That house was really beautiful.

Loki with his fairy wings was hilarious.

  11. Awww, Mara and Harcourt! It was good to see them again. :)

  12. I'm catching up at your legacy, and I have to say that I love this reference: "She doesn't want to be ashamed, but she is ashamed. She feels like the Beverly Crusher of the family; that one character on Star Trek who gets a grand total of one character development episode, and spends it being seduced by an evil ghost spirit thing."

I am not ashamed to admit that that is one of my all-time favorite Next Gen episodes.

Anyway, I'm enjoying your legacy so far. I'll get back to reading. C:

    1. I'm glad you're enjoying it so far. :D

Sorry I won't be able to update until September... but on the bright side, that gives you plenty of time to get through the chapters 16 through 28. Stuff gets a little complicated for poor generation 2.
